Paint Protection Film (PPF)

Service details

Service overview

Clear film fitted over the paint to guard against stone chips, light scratches and sand.

Paint protection film (PPF) is a clear layer applied to painted panels so it, rather than the paint, takes stone chips, light scratches and sand.

Coverage can be limited to the front end, extended to high-wear areas, or applied to the whole car, depending on how you use it.

  • Front-end or full-body coverage
  • Protection from stone chips and light scratches

What PPF protects against

PPF sits on top of the paint and takes the wear the paint would otherwise take:

  • stone chips and grit thrown up on the road
  • sand blasting on the front of the car at highway speed
  • light scratches and scuffs, for example around door handles
  • bird droppings and insect residue that can mark unprotected paint

PPF is not armour. It won't stop dents or protect against a heavy impact, and the car still needs careful washing.

Coverage options

Front-end coverage

The bumper, bonnet, front wings and mirrors take most of the chips. Covering these areas is a common choice for daily driving.

High-wear areas

Door edges, door-handle cups, sills, and the rear bumper's loading edge pick up scuffs and scratches in everyday use.

Full-body coverage

Covering every painted panel gives the most even protection and appearance across the car.

The installer can show you which panels each option covers on your model.

Prepare the paint before fitting

Film shows whatever is underneath it. Swirl marks, scratches or contamination left on the paint stay visible under the film. Cleaning and polishing the paint first, through car care, gives the best result. Existing chips or damaged paint should be repaired with bodywork and paint before the film goes on.

How installation works

  1. The car is washed and the paint decontaminated.
  2. The paint is inspected and, where agreed, polished.
  3. The film is cut to the shape of each panel and applied.
  4. Edges are finished and the film is checked for bubbles or lifting.
  5. You get aftercare instructions, including how long to wait before washing.

Questions to ask before choosing a film

  • Which film brand and product will be used?
  • What does the film warranty cover, and who provides it?
  • Will the edges be wrapped around the panels or stop at the visible surface?
  • How should the film be washed and maintained?

PPF protects the paint. Tint protects the cabin through the glass. If heat and glare are also a concern, see window tinting and heat insulation.
