When professional car care is worth it
- The paint looks dull or shows swirl marks in direct sunlight
- After a dusty season, a sandstorm or a long road trip
- Before selling the car, or after buying a used one
- When the interior has stains, spills or lingering smells
- Before fitting paint protection film (PPF), because the film keeps whatever is underneath it visible
Polishing or paint repair?
Polishing removes a very thin layer of the clear coat, so it can take out swirls and light marks. A scratch deep enough to catch a fingernail, chipped paint, or a dent needs bodywork and paint, or paintless dent repair if the paint is intact.
Keeping the finish between visits
Fine dust is one of the main causes of swirl marks. Wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth drags that grit across the paint. Rinse first, wash in the shade with a clean microfibre mitt, and dry with a separate soft towel.
For longer-lasting protection of the paint, consider PPF. For a cooler cabin and less sun on the interior, see window tinting and heat insulation.
