How to Tell Which Service Your Car Needs
Match the symptoms you notice to the right type of service, know when a full inspection should come first, and what to ask the service provider.
In this article
When your car starts making a new noise, shows a warning light or just feels different, it can be hard to know which kind of workshop to go to. This guide helps you match common symptoms to the right type of service, and tells you when a full inspection should come first.
Start with the symptoms
Before contacting a provider, note down what you've noticed. Clear details make diagnosis faster and help you avoid paying for the wrong service:
- What happens: a noise, a vibration, a warning light, a smell, weak cooling.
- When it happens: at start-up, while braking, at high speed, with the AC on, after the car has warmed up.
- When it started: suddenly, gradually, or after an accident or a recent repair.
- Warning lights: take a photo of the dashboard if a light comes on.
Which service matches which symptom?
| What you notice | Service to start with |
|---|---|
| A warning light you don't recognise, or symptoms you can't pin down | Inspection & Diagnostics |
| Unusual engine noises, vibration or poor performance | Mechanical Repair |
| The car is due for its scheduled service, oil or filter change | Periodic Maintenance |
| Trouble starting, a battery warning light, dim lights, or electrical accessories failing | Electrical & Air Conditioning |
| Weak cooling, warm air from the vents, or an odd smell when the AC is on | Electrical & Air Conditioning |
| Scratches, dents or paint damage | Bodywork & Paint |
| Dents where the paint isn't cracked or chipped | Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) |
| Protecting the paint from stone chips and light scratches | Paint Protection Film (PPF) |
| A car that needs a thorough clean or polish | Car Care |
| A car that's too hot inside, or harsh sun glare | Window Tinting & Heat Insulation |
| A specific part that needs replacing | Spare Parts |
| Accident damage that's part of an insurance claim | Insurance Claims |
| A car that can't be driven safely | Vehicle Towing / Flatbed Transport |
The table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Some symptoms have more than one possible cause. Starting trouble, for example, can be electrical or mechanical.
When to book a full inspection first
Book Inspection & Diagnostics before choosing a specific service when:
- there are several symptoms at once
- the symptom comes and goes, and you can't reproduce it
- a warning light is on and you don't know what it means
- the car has been in an accident, even a minor one
- you're buying a used car or preparing for a long trip
Fault codes from the car's computer, together with a road test, often narrow the problem down to one system.
Signs you should stop driving
Some symptoms mean the car should be transported rather than driven to the workshop. These include a red warning light, engine overheating, brake problems, fluid leaks, or damage to a tyre or the steering. See when you need a towing service for details.
Questions to ask the service provider
- What exactly is the fault, and how was it diagnosed?
- What needs repairing now, and what can wait?
- Will parts be repaired or replaced, and what kind of parts will be used?
- What's the expected cost and time, and will you be asked before any extra work is done?
- Is there a warranty on the work, and what does it cover?
